Kelly and Mike’s winter engagement photos in Detroit were everything you’d hope for in a romantic winter shoot—personal, fun, and full of cozy charm. For months, the three of us dreamed up the perfect session, and there was one non-negotiable: photos on the ice. Kelly grew up ice skating, while Mike laced up his skates for hockey, so capturing that part of their story felt essential.
With time off in January, we picked a day to head downtown. As anyone from Michigan knows, winter weather can be unpredictable—and that day, it was especially cold. Fortunately, we were able to book a warm indoor spot at The Scarab Club, one of Detroit’s iconic creative venues. Nearly a century old, this historic space—known for celebrating art, literature, and music—was the perfect backdrop. Its bookshelves and natural light created a magical indoor setting for their engagement portraits and offered a much-needed break from the chill outside.
Once we’d thawed out, it was time to brave the cold again and head to Campus Martius Park. The outdoor rink there gave us the chance to capture playful, memorable moments of Kelly and Mike skating together. While the ice shots were a must, some of my favorite images came when they were simply cuddled on a nearby bench, bundled up and laughing together. Their connection warmed up even the coldest part of the day.
Eventually, the freezing temps won, and it was time to wrap up. But this session was a perfect reflection of who they are—sentimental, adventurous, and totally in love.
Can’t wait to share more from their spring mini session soon!
