Joey and Shelley

Bride and Groom overlooking the Federal Building in Detroit Michigan

Friday morning.  That’s the day I got out of bed and raced through the usual coffee and other morning routines. I skipped my usual lazy scroll through Facebook.  I think I was even too excited for breakfast. Pretty typical wedding morning for me, but it wasn’t a typical Friday. Or a typical Detroit wedding.

Shelley and Joey have that thing. That connection. When I met them for their engagement session (yes, in case you are wondering, you should peek before you go through the rest of the photos here), there might have been skipping involved…on my part.  It happens when I get super excited about an engagement shoot.  Plus, Shelley, with those freckles.  Geez!

But before we get to the happily ever after, we have to know how it began.  As Shelley tells the tale, she and Joey met through a mutual friend.

“I was away at college at Western Michigan University and Joey was attending college at Wayne County Community College. Although we both grew up downriver, Joey in Wyandotte and myself in Woodhaven, we had never crossed paths. We chatted online for several months and then Joey came to WMU to visit his close friend, now best man Rob, and we finally met in person. The rest is history! “

Ok, back to the wedding day.

Friday morning was exciting. I headed off to the city to decide where to have the first look before their wedding at the Roostertail. We were at the Courtyard by Marriott right off of Jefferson, so the possibilities of shooting in my favorite city were really close to endless.  The sun was shining bright and I wanted a little shade…or so I thought. Right up until I spotted a rooftop with a killer view of the Detroit skyline.  So, it had to happen.  Joey and Shelley’s first look on the rooftop was perfect, and the time we spent enjoying the warm summer sun made the trek to the rooftop worthwhile. We did a few more portraits before the ceremony ….but the bride and groom portraits were just the beginning of the fun.

The couple was married on the patio of the Roostertail overlooking the Detroit River.  The day was perfect and emotions ran high, especially during the most beautiful speeches. It was the perfect recipe for an amazing party – the meal was perfect (complete with a margarita station to take the cake), and a full dance floor well into the night. Just look at that group shot of the bride and groom with their guest!  I think I even got home late.  No one really likes to leave a good party!

Shelly and Joey, you threw a party to die for.  Congratulations on your vows, friends. May you live a life of joy together!
